Which Jets player is at risk of getting cut next?

Yesterday, we were discussing possible free agent additions and noted that the Jets were linked as being a potential fit for, or having some level of interest in three of the top names left on the market; namely Logan Ryan, Markus Golden and Larry Warford. There were also reports this week that they may still be interested in adding former Eagles tackle Jason Peters.

It seems unlikely, but it's not impossible the Jets could also still be considering bringing back some of their own free agents such at Demaryius Thomas or Rontez Miles or maybe even Kelvin Beachum if they didn't land Peters.

For the Jets to sign any of these players - and they may end up making multiple moves between now and preseason - something would have to give because they are already at the 90-man roster limit.

Which players could be in danger? Who is currently in the crosshairs? Let's break it down.

Direct Replacements

Some of these additions might make another player expendable, so perhaps we'll see a like-for-like swap if the Jets add one of the players listed above. This would be particularly logical if the outgoing player's release provided the Jets with a cap saving to offset all or part of the cost of the new signing.

The most obvious example of this would be if they signed Warford. The assumption is that this could push Brian Winters off the roster. In fact, the cap saving available is above the same as the contract Warford is reportedly seeking. Winters could probably beat out the competition to win a role in a straight competition, but his durability issues coupled with his price-tag would make him the most likely player the Jets would part ways with to prevent a logjam at the guard positions.

It looks like there will be an open competition at the cornerback positions, so Ryan might just be a player to add into the mix at a spot the Jets are throwing resources at but might not yet know who they plan to rely on. However, we suspect the Jets intend to play a lot of zone this year and that's not been Nate Hairston's strong suit in the past, so perhaps they will cash in on a potential cap saving of just under $2 million, which could be important if, as it seems, Ryan's agents are insistent on trying to get more money out of the Jets.

For a player like Golden, Peters, Thomas or Miles, there are no other obvious veteran moves that would save any money, so you'd be picking off the players at the bottom of the depth chart at these positions. That would be the likes of Wyatt Ray, Corbin Kaufusi, Jeff Smith or Anthony Cioffi.

Other Candidates

Right now the Jets have 16 offensive linemen and it's customary to enter training camp with 15 so you can divide them into three distinct units. You might carry an extra one if you though that either one of your linemen might not be healthy when camp opened or perhaps if you had an older veteran who you knew you'd be giving regular rest to, but this does jump out as being somewhere that a move could be made.

Jimmy Murray, Brad Lundblade and Leo Koloamatangi could be the most likely cuts here. All three were added to the practice squad during the 2019 season but Koloamatangi has been with the organization the longest and also spent time on the active roster, although he didn't play.
