What did Todd Bowles say after Thursday's practice?
Here were some of the more interesting comments from Todd Bowles following Thursday's practice:
- He remained tight-lipped about who would start and what the rotation would be at quarterback, implying that they'd not yet decided. (In reality, it's pretty obvious from the work they did over the last few days that Josh McCown will start and then Christian Hackenberg will also get a series or two with the starters before the rest of the second unit comes in.)
- Hackenberg will play throughout the preseason. Bowles is hoping he'll get better but isn't expecting him to be Roger Staubach...or even Danny White right away.
- It's "pretty even" between the three quarterbacks.
- Bilal Powell will be held out of the first game. Whether or not Matt Forté will play is to be decided upon tomorrow.
- There's about eight players vying for the five starting spots on the offensive line.
- Preseason performance carries some weight but progress in practice is important. (This semi-contradicts his assertion over the past two weeks that practice doesn't really tell you anything and you have to wait for game action to make those assessments).
- He knows how many starting roles are up for grabs but won't say.
- Jason Vander Laan understands things more and is doing all the right things. He's in better shape than last year and they are eager to see him in game action.
- Derrick Jones has good physical traits and is getting better but still needs to learn a few things.
- Jeremy Clark's return is not imminent to his knowledge.
- He attributed the drops by the receivers to concentration but wasn't unduly concerned, saying it was just a bad day.
- With the return game, it will depend on how the game goes as to who gets a shot.
- He'll be happy to see Eric Decker on Saturday but doesn't really want him to have a good game.
We'll let you know if anyone else says anything interesting.
