Special Teams Review: Jets-Bills
We've been breaking down this week's game. We conclude today's postgame analysis with a look at the special teams.
Let's review the key contributions...
Kicking game - Gregging for Mercy
Kicker Greg Zuerlein is the difference between this team being 2-4 and 4-2 as he cost them another game by hitting the upright on two go-ahead field goal attempts in the second half. While he had two extra points, two field goals and three touchbacks, the Jets need him to make those crucial kicks.
Jeremy Ruckert and Leki Fotu allowed some pressure on one of those misses but there was none on the other one. Brenden Bates also allowed pressure on two of his makes.
Tyler Bass also missed two kicks for the Bills with Qwan'tez Stiggers getting pressure off the edge on one of them. Brandin Echols also had one pressure off the edge but it was on a make.
Punter Thomas Morstead only punted twice. Once from the Jets' 35 was fair caught at the Bills 20, but the other one from near midfield was put into the end zone.
Return game - Zay La Vie
Isaiah Davis was once again the only player to get to return a kickoff this week but it was a good one as he took it out near the 40 behind an excellent Irv Charles block.
Xavier Gipson fielded two punts, one for a fair catch and the other where he was hit immediately but span out of the tackle and got eight yards out of it. He left one other punt and it went into the end zone for a touchback.
Once again, Gipson wasn't helped much by his blocking. Echols was beaten on the first of those and Ashtyn Davis was beaten on the other.
Kick coverage - 4.D.-Chazz
Only one kick was returned this week with Davis combining with Chazz Surratt to make the tackle. Charles got downfield well on that one to redirect the return man.
Otherwise, the only player to make any kind of contribution in coverage was Echols, who drew a holding penalty as he got downfield to force a fair catch.
Surratt is now tied with Jamien Sherwood for the Jets' lead in terms of special teams tackles but they have just four. Jets legend Nick Bellore, who is now in Washington, leads the league with 11.
We'll be back with the 3-on-D and 3-on-O over the next few days...
