Special Teams Review: Jets at Browns
The special teams unit wasn't bad yesterday, with a big play to set up a touchdown and limited negative plays.
Let's review the key contributions...
Kicking game - The KPL crusader
The biggest special teams play of yesterday's game saw the recently activated KEVIN PIERRE-LOUIS bust through the line to block a punt, leading to the Jets' first touchdown. Pierre-Louis hasn't played on defense yet but that's the kind of playmaking this unit has lacked in recent years.
As for their own kicking game, LACHLAN EDWARDS put up decent numbers (over 49 yards gross and 46 net), although he had one low line drive from his end zone that was fielded on the dead run at the halfway line, giving the Browns excellent field position. He would later flip the field with a 62-yarder.
Kicker JASON MYERS held his nerve on a chip shot field goal to give the Jets a fourth quarter lead. He also had two successful extra points and three touchbacks.
Return game - Holdin' Herndon
ANDRE ROBERTS didn't get much of a chance to do much in the return game, although he made the first man miss on a 12-yard punt return.
On a kick-off late in the first half, the Jets actually put BILAL POWELL and TRENTON CANNON deep, with Roberts as an upback, presumably in case of a squib kick. The kick-off went out of bounds but, with 27 seconds to go, the Jets couldn't capitalize as they went three-and-out from their 40.
CHRIS HERNDON had a holding penalty on Roberts' only kick-off return, forcing the Jets to start from their 10-yard line. Roberts had fielded the ball in the end zone and made a weaving return out to the 34.
CHARONE PEAKE got beaten once by the Browns' gunner on a punt return.
Kick coverage - Dougie Fresh
The Jets made some nice plays in kick coverage this week as TERRENCE BROOKS was in on a couple of tackles for the second straight week, including one crucial one in the open field.
DOUG MIDDLETON might have had the best special teams play, though, as he ran down and blew up a punt return for a short gain. NEVILLE HEWITT also made some noise though, as he had a big hit after Myers had to kick off from the 20 due to ISAIAH CROWELL'S unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Pierre-Louis also contributed a couple of good plays in coverage, making an open field tackle on one and breaking down well to contain the return man on another.
Long snapper THOMAS HENNESSY made an important tackle on a punt return too, although there was a hold on the return anyway.
Peake, DARRYL ROBERTS and TRENTON CANNON saw time as gunners with Cannon and Roberts each drawing a flag. Roberts also got downfield well to force a fair catch on one punt. Peake overpursued on one return though.
