Special Teams Review: Dolphins at Jets
Unfortunately, the special teams unit was unable to replicate their outstanding performance in the opener.
Let's review the key contributions...
Kicking game - Myers misfires
The Jets have never given the impression they're completely happy with JASON MYERS as their kicker, having worked out three other guys before the season began, so he can't afford mistakes like his missed extra point, which could have loomed large late in the game.
A less-than-perfect THOMAS HENNESSY snap may have been a factor in the miss, as LACHLAN EDWARDS had to reach up and get the ball down quickly.
Edwards punted pretty well all day, averaging over 52 yards per punt, despite the fact he was under pressure a couple of times. BRANDON COPELAND got beaten in pass protection and TERRENCE BROOKS got driven back into Edwards.
LEONARD WILLIAMS broke through the line to pressure one Miami kick, but the one they missed wasn't caused by pressure.
Return game - Roberts Rebellion
ANDRE ROBERTS had a nondescript game after his monster start to the season in Detroit. He only had one return, on which he seemed to have room, but went sideways and only gained four yards.
He also misjudged a couple of punts, one of which bounced at about the 10 and rolled out of bounds inside the five and another which bounced outside the 20 and rolled out of bounds at the 10. Matt Haack landed all six of his punts inside the 20, including four inside the 10.
CHARONE PEAKE committed an illegal block in the back penalty to slow down the Jets' comeback in the fourth quarter.
Kick coverage - Here comes the long snapper
After not recording any special teams tackles last week, the Jets got a chance to cover some kicks this week, as TERRENCE BROOKS was in on a couple of tackles. Hennessy made up for his uncharacteristic bad snap with a good open field tackle on a punt.
The Jets' tackling was inconsistent though, as JORDAN JENKINS, KEVIN PIERRE-LOUIS, Copeland, Peake and DARRYL ROBERTS all missed chances to make a tackle. Peake got downfield well on one punt to force a fair catch though.
A lot of players only featured on special teams this week, including TRENTON CANNON, Peake, Roberts, Pierre-Louis, PARRY NICKERSON, Brooks and NEVILLE HEWITT.
