Sterling was re-signed in March having began last season as a starter, but missed most of the year with concussion symptoms. He becomes the second tight end to be released since the Jets draft Trevon Wesco, with Jordan Leggett also being released last month. The Jets also signed Daniel Brown in free agency.
Sterling had missed practice last week due to injury.
