Roster News: Jets re-sign Carter, place Mauldin on IR, add to practice squad

Another flurry of activity today saw the Jets make the following moves:

Two important notes here: The first is that Mauldin is eligible to return later to the active roster later in the season. The second is that the Jets kept two spots open. Jason Vander Laan, Freddie Bishop and Marcus Murphy, who were waived yesterday will all be eligible once they clear waivers.

Carter is a player they probably intended to re-sign all along; just moving him off the roster temporarily rather than a player who would have to clear waivers before they could bring him back. That enabled them to comply with the rules to enable Mauldin to be designated for return.

In terms of the practice squad signings, we shared some intel on Gray and Natson yesterday and Gamble did well in preseason with the Jets with four tackles, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.

As for Sinkfield, he's a 26-year old who has been trying to make it onto an NFL roster since he went undrafted in 2013. He is best known for running an unofficial 4.19 40-yard dash at his pro day, although the official time was clocked at 4.33. The Jets will be his 10th pro team, including three in Canada. He had some big moments as a wide receiver and punt returner in the CFL, but played cornerback in preseason with Minnesota. He totalled five tackles and three passes defensed in two preseason games.
