Smith was an undrafted free agent out of Virginia in 2017 and spent his first year with Miami, including some time the active roster, although he did not play. He ended up on New England's practice squad after being released in final cuts by Miami at the end of preseason.
The 23-year old Smith is listed at 6-foot-4 and 308 pounds. In eight preseason games with Miami, including two starts, Smith gave up two sacks and had three penalties. He played at both tackle positions having been a right tackle in college.
Matthews was a disappointment with the Jets, catching just two passes after having been signed to replace the injured Terrelle Pryor. He injured his hamstring in Saturday's game.
