QuickFix: Reviewing the rotations against the Broncos
Let's start today's analysis with a quick review of the rotations on offense and defense in yesterday's game.
Another huge snap disparity
Last week the Jets had their highest offensive snap count and lowest defensive snap count of the season due to their heavy time of possession advantage. This week, their inability to sustain drives led to the opposite effect as they ended up with a season-low in terms of offensive plays.
They didn't have a season-high in terms of defensive snaps though because both teams seemed content to run clock in the fourth quarter. In the end there were fewer combined plays in this game than in any other game this year apart from the Oakland game, another one where the game was out of hand in the fourth quarter.
These anomalies lead to some snap count fluctuation that is actually misleading because players are largely receiving their typical workloads.
Abandoning the heavy packages
Last week, the Jets used Lawrence Thomas quite a lot and the Jets controlled the ball on offense and generated a ton of yards on the ground. However, his snap breakdown actually revealed that they gained a total of just two yards on 17 carries with him in the game.
In this week, they went with a "less is more" approach and he was just in the game for four conventional runs. These generated just six yards. They didn't use Brent Qvale as an extra blocker much either. He had similar numbers last week and they gained nine yards on four running plays with him in the gain this week, three of which overlapped with the Thomas plays.
Any plans they had for how to operate the running game may have been sidetracked by Elijah McGuire going down injured on his only snap.
Legion of Obum
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the defensive gameplan this week was that Obum Gwacham saw action for the first time all season, albeit only on a few snaps.
Also of interest was that Kony Ealy seems to be paying for his recent lack of production as he played just 15 snaps, easily a season-low.
On the outside, Jordan Jenkins and Josh Martin got the majority of the reps and David Bass was the primary back-up. Freddie Bishop was back to being inactive.
Gwacham saw action on a nickel package with a four-man front and Ealy coming off the other edge.
