Jets Camp Practice Recap - 8/8/23
Media was on hand for the Jets' training camp practice today. Here's what went down according to those on hand:
- The team was not in pads with joint practices coming up tomorrow and Thursday;
- Although the Jets were hopeful Garrett Wilson would return today, he did not practice;
- Carl Lawson, who has a back issue, also did not practice. However, Jermaine Johnson, Quincy Williams and Laken Tomlinson were back after being banged up in the last practice. Johnson was in on the first unit with Lawson out;
- Randall Cobb, Xavier Gipson and Alex Erickson were the only players fielding punts even though Mecole Hardman is listed as the number one punt returner;
- Max Mitchell moved to left tackle with Billy Turner moving to the right but both remained on the first unit. Mekhi Becton remains as the second team left tackle with Wes Schweitzer as the second team center and Joe Tippmann working with the threes;
- Allen Lazard caught a nice pass over the middle from Aaron Rodgers as he beat Sauce Gardner on a good route;
- Zach Wilson had a nice connection to Xavier Gipson downfield;
- Tim Boyle hit on a comebacker to a tightly-covered Jason Brownlee;
- Corey Davis had a big play called back due to a CJ Uzomah offensive pass interference penalty;
- Rodgers had to vacate the pocket to find Bam Knight on a dump-off;
- Jimmy Moreland picked off a poor throw by Rodgers who was off-balance as he tried to find Uzomah. He ran it back for his third pick-six of camp;
- New signing Pita Taumoepenu had a sack against the third string offense;
- Defense dominated the red zone period as Quinton Jefferson blew up a run, Jordan Whitehead deflected a pass and Deuce Carter had a coverage sack;
- Wilson rolled right and found Gipson for a touchdown in red zone work;
- Rodgers continued to struggle as he overthrew an open Ace Carter and was then intercepted again as Zaire Barnes came down with a pass tipped by John Franklin-Myers;
- He bounced back to thread the needle to Cobb for a score;
- Wilson had a touchdown connection on a nice throw to Kenny Yeboah who made a falling grab; and
- Mekhi Becton and Micheal Clemons battled hard all day in a competitive matchup where Becton seemed to get the better of the second-year player.
