How the hell am I supposed to know who this is?

In an occasional feature, we're going to briefly highlight any of the lesser-known players that make an unexpected impact during camp or in the season. Today, we focus on safety Matthias Farley.

What he did:

Entering last Sunday's game, Farley - who signed with the Jets last October - had only played nine defensive snaps with the team since joining them. However, Ashtyn Davis suffered a toe injury which may sideline him for some time, perhaps even for the rest of the season.

Farley took over as a full-time safety for the rest of the game and figures to be a starter from here on in. Davis has been ruled out of Sunday's game against Seattle already and may also find himself on injured reserve soon.

Against the Raiders, Farley's only statistical contribution was a quarterback hit and there were a couple of plays where he got lucky in coverage - a deep throw where the receiver got a step but the pass was overthrown and a red zone play where he lost his man as the play got extended, leading to a touchdown that was negated by an offensive penalty.

The 28-year old has some experience as a starter. In 2017, he started 15 games for the 4-12 Colts, racking up 98 tackles and two interceptons. However, he's only started one other game in his career.

Outlook:

Barring someone making an unexpected position change, the Jets don't have many other options at the safety position with Bennett Jackson also injured. Elijah Campbell was just added to the active roster, but he's never played a defensive snap in a regular season game. They also have Saquon Hampton, who has at least seen some brief action on defense last year with the Saints, on the practice squad.

The Jets view Farley as a leader on special teams and he's actually leading the team in special teams tackles and snap count this season. However, they may transition him out of those roles now he's presumably going to be starting.

Farley is a free agent at the end of the season and could convince the team he's worth bringing back as a depth player and special teams contributor if he performs well over the last month of the season.
