Green & White practice/scrimmage recap
This year's annual instra-squad scrimmage just finished. Here's what went down:
- Chandler Catanzaro won the kicking competition 5-to-4. He was well short from 60, while Ross Martin's kick went wide.
- Jamal Adams, Matt Forté and Bilal Powell did not participate.
Quincy Enunwa suffered a non-contact injury after dropping a pass from Hackenberg in the end zone. Lorenzo Mauldin also tweaked his knee during pass rushing drills and was hurt again during the scrimmage.
The team still ran the standard practice drills, including one-on-one passing drills and seven-on-seven, during which Josh McCown threw a touchdown to Robby Anderson, Christian Hackenberg threw one to Frankie Hammond and Bryce Petty threw three to Chris Harper, Jalin Marshall and Charone Peake, who made a nice catch on a fade route.
Now, details of the scrimmage itself:
- Frank Beltre and Jordan Jenkins started with the first unit at outside linebacker in 11-on-11's. Also of note, Sheldon Richardson did not start and Buster Skrine was the second cornerback. Brent Qvale started at right tackle.
- Beltre and Leonard Williams sacked McCown on the first series, a three-and-out. The first play was a false start. Obviously.
- Hackenberg to Anderson for a first down on the next series but then a Julian Stanford tackle in the backfield forced third and long and ultimately another fourth down.
- Petty's first series was also a three and out with good coverage by Xavier Coleman on third down.
- Hackenberg was up next, but immediately sacked by an untouched Spencer Paysinger and then was almost intercepted. They ran the ball on third and long and punted again.
- After a good run by Romar Morris, Josh McCown threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Chris Harper on third down. Buster Skrine apparently slipped and fell on the play.
- Petty was up next. He completed short passes to Harper and Anthony Firkser and a first down to Myles White, albeit on an underthrow. Then Jordan Todman had a nice run behind a Craig Watts block and a short yardage conversion inside the 10 before the drive stalled. Catanzaro made a chip-shot field goal.
- Coleman had two break-ups on Petty's drive but injured his knee on the play on the second of those and was helped to the locker room by the trainers.
- On McCown's next drive, he completed a pass to Austin Seferian-Jenkins but then Marcus Maye jumped a route to intercept his next pass for a 62-yard touchdown.
- Hackenberg bobbled a snap on his next drive and was sacked by Williams and Josh Martin. The drive ended in another punt.
- Peake dropped a Petty third down pass on the next drive, leading to another punt after run stops by Stanford and Mike Pennel.
- Morris ran for a first down to open up the next drive and then McCown found Anderson for a first down. McCown capped off the 35-yard drive with a five yard touchdown pass to Seferian-Jenkins.
- The next drive opened at the 25 with a Corey Lemonier run stop, but ended with a Hackenberg 24-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Leggett.
- Petty got the next drive from the 25 but threw incomplete on third and short with McDougle in downfield coverage. That came after a 9-yard pass to White and a Jenkins run stuff. Ross Martin kicked a 34-yard field goal on fourth down.
- To finish up, there was a two-minute drill. After an Elijah McGuire run, McCown found Anderson, who beat Morris Claiborne for a first down. The drive stalled when McCown overthrew Jalin Marshall on third down and Buster Skrine blitzed for a strip sack on fourth down.
