DraftFix: Notable details from 2023's pro day schedule so far
We're about halfway through the 2023 pro day schedule, where combine snubs or anyone who didn't or couldn't do a full combine workout finally get a chance to work out for teams.
Here's some of the more interesting notes from some of the pro days that have taken place so far:
Texas
Defensive back D'Shawn Jamison, a combine snub, reportedly ran a 4.48 in the 40-yard dash.
Illinois
CB Devon Witherspoon, a projected first round pick, was unable to workout at the combine due to a hamstring injury, but was still bothered by it at his pro day and did not work out.
Oregon State
After a good combine, tight end Luke Musgrave posted solid but unspectacular numbers in the bench and shuttles.
Clemson
Defensive tackle Brian Bresee failed to improve on his vertical from the combine but posted outstanding agility numbers. In fact, his short shuttle was faster than Musgrave's at 302.
Linebacker Trenton Simpson who ran a 4.43 at the combine added an impressive 40.5-inch vertical at his pro day and posted above average agility numbers and broad jump.
Edge Myles Murphy who couldn't work out at the combine was still bothered by a hamstring issue and will now work out for teams on April 4th.
Georgia
Cornerback Kelee Ringo ran a 4.37 at the combine but didn't do much to help himself at his pro day. He had no improvement to his jumps and posted below average numbers for strength and agility.
Safety Christopher Smith had a disappointing combine and did little to help himself here with poor agility numbers.
UCLA
After a solid combine, RB Zach Charbonnet didn't do much to help himself here as he posted below average numbers in the shuttles.
Guard Atonio Mafi, a 330-pound combine snub, was unable to work out due to a calf injury. He posted 21 bench press reps.
Tulane
Running back Tyjae Spears was clocked at 4.47 in the 40-yard dash, having posted excellent jumps at the combine.
Georgia Tech
Defensive end Keion White only did a partial workout at the combine but had good numbers. Initially reports indicated he ran 4.65 at 285 pounds at his pro day which would have been sensational. Official figures were 4.79 at 281 though. This is still good, but he did pull a hamstring on the run.
Michigan
323-pound defensive tackle Mazi Smith has some off-field issues and was bothered by a hamstring at his pro day workout. His vertical and broad jump were solid for his size.
Mike Morris is regarded as a tweener on the defensive line and posted poor numbers at 275 pounds at the combine. He didn't help himself much at his pro day as his 40-time was even slower. Agility numbers were adequate though.
Wisconsin
A 127-inch broad jump is impressive for a cornerback or wide receiver but almost unheard of for a punter. That's what Andy Vujnovich managed at the Badgers' pro day though.
Rutgers
Christian Izien is an undersized safety but may have established himself as a potential sleeper with some sparkling workout numbers. He ran a 4.41 and posted a 41.5-inch vertical in addition to posting 20 bench press reps and a 4.15 in the short shuttle.
Bowling Green
Defensive tackle Karl Brooks was one of the highest profile combine snubs and he ran a 5.06 and posted 28 bench press reps at 296. The rest of his numbers were a mixed bag though.
Stephen F Austin
Edge BJ Thompson had an eagerly-anticipated workout after posting some amazing numbers in the past. Unfortunately, he was dealing with a stomach bug, although his numbers were still apparently very good.
Iowa State
Will McDonald IV is also regarded as an athletic edge and he ran a 4.66 and posted a 36-inch vertical in his pro day workout with excellent agility numbers.
USC
Wide receiver Jordan Addison had disappointing numbers at the combine for a smaller receiver and may have been hoping to build on these but unfortunately couldn't because there was a torrential downpour. He did try to show willing by running some routes in the rain though.
Ohio State
Finally, probable first round receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba already posted good numbers at the combine but saved his 40 for OSU's pro day. He was clocked at 4.48 which is good but not great.
We'll post another update when the pro day schedule is over.
