Countdown to Camp: 4
As we look ahead to training camp in late July, we're taking a daily retrospective look back at some random people, moments and games from Jets history...
The Current 4
Punter Lac Edwards showed significant improvement last year following a disappointing rookie year. His spot seems safe as they haven't brought in any serious competition for him all offseason.
The Greatest
Quarterback Brett Favre was the ultimate impulse buy from the Jets, as they added him late in the offseason and basically had to change their plans. Favre spent much of the season playing hurt, didn't have a single 300-yard game and posted a 53.3 quarterback rating during the team's December swoon, which saw them miss the postseason despite an 8-3 start. He did throw 22 touchdown passes though.
Here is Favre's best play as a Jet:
The other 4's
Glenn Foley, Louie Aguiar, Ryan Quigley...
In 2014, the John Idzik era crashed to a halt and Rex Ryan was out too, as they won their opener, but then blew a huge lead in Green Bay and ended up losing eight in a row to fall out of contention. They ended up 4-12.
Quarterback Geno Smith had an awful second season, then posted the best numbers of his career in a final game win over Miami.
Nick Mangold and Sheldon Richardson were the team's only pro bowlers. New signing Eric Decker fell just short of a thousand-yard season.
4 yard-touchdown
Here's a nice trick play for a four yard score that was officially Bryce Petty's first career touchdown pass, even though he didn't throw the ball to the player who scored:
Of course, the biggest four yard touchdown in team history was Matt Snell's run in Super Bowl III.
4 in the record books
Wesley Walker is the only Jets player in history to have scored four touchdowns in a game. Mark Ingram and Marvin Jones are among those who've caught four touchdown passes against them.
Two Jets have managed to record four sacks in a game. Mark Gastineau did it against the Colts in 1983 and then did it against the same team in 1984 (and in the 1984 pro bowl). However, the most recent Jet to achieve this was John Abraham, whose four sacks led the Jets to a 16-9 win over the Saints in 2001.
In a 1964 loss to the Broncos, the Jets were intercepted a record four times by Willie Brown.
Let us know if there's any connections to 4 that we missed...
