Copeland missed all of last season after tearing a pectoral muscle in preseason. He's 26, has good size at 6'3" and 263 pounds and was undrafted out of Pennsylvania in 2013.
He's mostly just been a special teams contributor in the first few years of his career with Detroit, recording 22 tackles, half a sack and one forced fumble. He did start one game in 2016.
After already having added Kevin Pierre-Louis, the Jets have now shored up their veteran linebacker depth and added a couple of useful special teams contributors. Pierre-Louis is effectively Julian Stanford's replacement, while Copeland could replace Bruce Carter. He can also play on the outside.
We'll add Copeland to the list of players we'll break down in-depth over the next few weeks.
