After Further Review: Jets-Rams

By popular demand, we're again going to have a post after each game that breaks down some of the controversial decisions from the officiating crew in the game.

Penalty Count

Rams 5-45 (leading to zero Jets first downs)
Jets 8-62 (leading to one Rams first down)

Note: This does not include penalties that are declined or off-set.

Plays where the call was obvious, uncontroversial or not visible on broadcast footage

Jets Penalties

  • Offensive holding on Olu Fashanu on 3rd down. Hung on for a bit too long as Jared Verse came around the edge.
  • Offensive holding on John Simpson. Blatantly hung onto Braden Fiske but couldn't prevent the sack, which was negated by another penalty anyway.
  • Delay of game late in the second quarter. Totally unnecessary because they had timeouts in hand.
  • Offensive holding on Alijah Vera-Tucker. Pulled left and set the edge but was ruled to have grabbed the outside shoulder for too long.
  • Illegal man downfield on Fashanu. Not even close. He fired off the line and was 3-4 yards downfield before the throw.
  • Illegal man downfield on Morgan Moses. This one was closer but the timing was off as Moses got out in front of a screen.
  • Tony Adams defensive pass interference as he broke up a third down pass. This was a fair call as he pulled down on the shoulder of the receiver before the ball arrived.

Rams Penalties

  • Illegal use of the hands by Darious Williams. This wasn't clear from the TV footage, but he was covering Davante Adams and did kind of swipe at his helmet as he tried to jam him. This negated a sack by offsetting a holding penalty.
  • Jaylen McCullough offside on fourth down, although the Jets converted anyway. Reacted early and took a step towards the receiver, crossing the line of scrimmage as the ball was snapped.
  • Beaux Limmer false start. Double clutched before he snapped the ball.
  • Limmer offensive holding. Pulled down Quincy Williams from behind in the hole.

Penalties warranting further discussion or explanation

Jets Penalties

  • Offensive holding on Joe Tippmann. Both Tippmann and Simpson were reaching across a lineman as he split a double-team but Tippmann actually let go and didn't appear to hold. Simpson held on a bit longer so that was probably still a correct call but the wrong player identification.

Rams Penalties

  • Hunter Long illegal block in the back on a kickoff return. He gave Ashtyn Davis a slight bump, knocking Davis to the ground but it looked a little like Davis deliberately stepped in front of him and slowed down, then flopped to draw the call.
  • Long illegal motion. The announcers implied this was harsh but he was definitely moving upfield as the ball was about to be snapped and the same thing has been called on the Jets several times this year. You either need to be set for a second before the snap, or moving laterally.
  • Limmer offensive holding on Javon Kinlaw and Kyren Williams unsportsmanlike conduct. Limmer grabbed Kinlaw by the nameplate as he penetrated and Williams was jawing with Jamien Sherwood after the play and flipped the ball at him. By accepting the unsportsmanlike and declining the hold, the positive yardage counted but this made it 3rd-and-25 instead of 2nd-and-28. The Williams call came after Sherwood tried to swat the ball out of his hands and, if he succeeded, the flag could have gone the other way.

Notable no-calls etc

Here were some of the other notable missed calls, replay situations and controversial moments:

  • Garrett Wilson's juggling incompletion did hit the ground as he almost laid out for a spectacular diving grab.
  • Tony Adams was down at the 24 on the interception, so his return to the 35 was correctly taken away from him.
  • Kyren Williams' forward progress wasn't completely stopped on the play where he was shoved for extra yardage but they often blow it dead before that point.
  • Wilson's knee was down inbounds on his sideline catch.
  • It looked like Isaiah Davis was given a favorable spot as he was given a first down after being stopped at the marker but it was probably too close to overturn.
  • Verse should have had a personal foul for what looked like a deliberate stomp on Jeremy Ruckert's stomach. Ruckert could easily have been penalized for his response too.
  • Puka Nacua also got a generous spot on a play where he was stopped at the marker.
  • The Jets wanted pass interference on Darious Williams when Rodgers' pass to Conklin on fourth down was incomplete. This was similar to the Adams play as Williams had his hand on Conklin's shoulder before the ball arrived.
