After Further Review: Jets-Raiders Officiating
By popular demand, we're again going to have a post after each game that breaks down some of the controversial decisions from the officiating crew in the game.
Penalty Count
Raiders 3-21 (leading to two Jets first downs)
Jets 6-40 (leading to three Raiders first downs)
Plays where the call was obvious, uncontroversial or not visible on broadcast footage
Jets Penalties
- Jamison Crowder false start
- Another Crowder false start
Raiders Penalties
- LaMarcus Joyner neutral zone infraction
- Clelin Ferrell personal foul. Happened off screen but came after a play where he was engaged with Mekhi Becton
Penalties warranting further discussion or explanation
Jets Penalties
- Bryce Hall defensive holding. This came early on in the route as his coverage at the catch-point seemed clean. There wasn't much of a grab but he perhaps he let his hand get outside the receiver's shoulder
- Arthur Maulet personal foul on a punt. This came after Hunter Renfrow had made a fair catch and Maulet took him down. The tackle appeared a little high around the neck but was clean, so the assumption here is that this is literally just a late hit. Maulet was arguing because Renfrow's fair catch signal was very late and therefore arguably illegal. It's either an illegal fair catch signal and then the late hit doesn't matter but an illegal hit to the head/neck area might offset it or it's a late hit and the nature of the hit is rendered moot.
- Javelin Guidry defensive holding on 3rd-and-5. This was a good call, as he grabbed jersey when the receiver ran a whip. However, Marcus Maye was in position to jump the route so it would've been interesting to see this play out with no penalty.
- Maye defensive holding on 4th down. Blatant grab down the middle because Maye knew he was beaten for a touchdown. He's lucky this was ruled before the throw otherwise it would have been a spot foul.
- Lamar Jackson defensive holding on 4th down. This was initially called on Ashtyn Davis who wasn't on the field. Initially the replay was focused on Matthias Farley who seemed to make contact at the break of the route but didn't grab. However, another angle clearly showed Jackson grabbed Darren Waller at the back of the end zone. The penalty was offset anyway and the Jets got the stop on fourth down.
Raiders Penalties
- Anthony Morrow pass interference in the end zone on a two-point conversion. Very clear call here as Morrow never looked back for the ball and shoved Ryan Griffin with the ball in the air.
- Gabe Jackson holding penalty on Quinnen Williams. This was the penalty that offset Jackson's holding penalty as mentioned above. Williams' arm was grabbed to prevent him from chasing Derek Carr as he vacated the pocket.
Notable no-calls
There was another pretty low penalty count this week but we did see some contentious decisions and no-calls.
One big one that we already mentioned in our nuggets article was that Darnold was hit in the head on one of his fumbles. Also, when Trayvon Mullen intercepted him, he clearly had a handful of the receiver's jersey. If those two calls went the Jets' way the outcome could have been very different.
Others we noticed included a blatant delay of game before Carr converted a pass to Waller, although he was incorrectly marked short of the first down so that almost cancels out.
As ever there were a few plays where defensive players wanted a holding call, including a couple on Mekhi Becton and a few receivers who wanted calls on the defensive back in coverage, including one on Jackson and one on Maye. Pat Elflein also got away with a takedown on a shoeless Joyner at the end of a play.
Finally, two other controversial calls saw the Raiders failing to down a punt at the one yard line (and the officials seemed to get this one right) and Ty Johnson was not ruled to have gone out of bounds as the Jets tried to run out the clock near the end, although ultimately that didn't matter.
