After Further Review: Jets-Jaguars

By popular demand, we're again going to have a post after each game that breaks down some of the controversial decisions from the officiating crew in the game.

Plays where the call was obvious, uncontroversial or not visible on broadcast footage

Jets Penalties

Sauce Gardner defensive holding to negate a Will McDonald coverage sack. Gardner has no argument here and admitted as much after the game. He clearly grabbed the receiver in the end zone, possibly more than once.
McDonald illegal hands to the face. This was clear as he had his hand up under the chin strap and made no attempt to remove it.
Solomon Thomas offside to negate a 3rd-and-long stop. Clearly jumped early.
Eric Watts moved too early on a kickoff. This wasn't clear on the broadcast.

Jaguars Penalties

Anton Harrison offensive holding. Beaten by McDonald and grabbed him across the neck for a clear penalty.
Foye Oluokun facemask penalty. Tackled Aaron Rodgers and his hand ended up caught up in the facemask, even though there was no grab or twist.
Oluokun pass interference on Isaiah Davis. Early, and probably unnecessary, contact on the outside.
Harrison holding on McDonald again. Beaten on an inside move and reached across him to grab him.
Unnecessary roughness on Andrew Wingard at the end of a return. This was not shown on the broadcast.

Penalties warranting further discussion or explanation

Jets Penalties

Haason Reddick personal foul. A ridiculous call because the Jaguars lineman had a grip of Reddick's jersey and wouldn't let go and then as Reddick tried to free himself from that, the pair tripped over a body on the ground. In the same incident, Eric Watts kind of swatted a Jaguars player's hand away in similar fashion and was bumped into the official by Reddick and the other Jaguars player falling down, so maybe that was what actually led to the flag.
Holding on Olu Fashanu to negate an Allen Lazard first down catch. There didn't seem to be a hold by Fashanu on this play but there was an obvious one on John Simpson who grabbed his man after letting him get past him into the backfield. Possibly just called the wrong number, although this was not corrected in the gamebook.
Snap infraction on Joe Tippmann. Called a false start as the Jaguars jumped offside on fourth down but he didn't seem to make any sudden movements or deviate from his usual technique.
Gardner pass interference. There was the slightest grab on the receiver's arm but nothing to impede his progress or ability to compete for the ball. Gardner said after the game that he disagreed with this one.

Jaguars Penalties

Montaric Brown defensive pass interference on Garrett Wilson. Grabbed Wilson's arm although Wilson also had a handful of Brown's jersey. The TV expert agreed with the call.
Offensive pass interference on Brian Thomas to negate a big gain on a screen. Even if this wasn't blocking early before the pass was released (it was), you could probably argue that Thomas held Gardner on the play too.
Defensive pass interference on Tyson Campbell. Wilson drew this one too, as he lost Campbell on a whip route and Campbell tapped out and grabbed him to prevent the touchdown.

Notable no-calls etc

Here were some of the other notable missed calls, replay situations and controversial moments:

Walker Little got away with a blatant false start on a play where the Jags were called for holding anyway.
Lazard got away with an illegal motion.
Thomas was clearly held by Little on the play where Mac Jones escaped on 3rd-and-10 and ran for a first down.
Little also blatantly held McDonald after getting beaten on a spin move.
Chazz Surratt should have been called for delay of game as he knocked the ball away from a Jaguars player when they were trying to spot the ball but he was bailed out by the fact the Jags already called a timeout.
Parker Washington's sideline catch was correctly ruled complete.
The clock operation was correct as the Jags had one second remaining to kick the field goal before half time following an incompletion.
Wilson was clearly held near the goal line on one play and showed frustration on the sideline.
Jones wanted a pass interference call on Qwan'tez Stiggers but none of the contact made by Stiggers prevented the receiver from moving or making a play on the ball.
Davante Adams' overturned touchdown was pretty close and arguably too close to overturn but the replay booth supposedly had another angle we didn't get to see that made it clearly short.
Rodgers got a generous spot as he seemed to go out of bounds short of the marker on a scramble.
Rodgers got away with one obvious delay of game and had two others prevented by timeouts.
Surratt was blatantly shoved in the back on a kickoff return but no call was made.
Adams' did get both feet down inbounds with control on his leaping sideline grab.
The no-call on Da'Von Hamilton's late hit out of bounds on Rodgers was correct because he didn't actually hit him.
The booth reviewed by upheld the spot on Brenton Strange's catch just shy of the marker in the closing stages and also upheld the fact that he was out of bounds.
